Program requirements have not changed. Students who are District residents and who attend a District public, public charter or private school, between the ages of 5 and 21, can still enroll in the Kids Ride Free program.
When and where can the new KRF SmarTrip card be used?
KRF is for transportation to and from school related activities. If a student needs to get to a school-related event on the weekend, they may use this card.

How does a new card get activated or loaded?
The new KRF SmarTrip card will come pre-loaded with the Kids Ride Free pass and will be ready to use on Metrorail, Metrobus, and DC Circulator for school-related travel when it is issued to the student.
Will cards be assigned to specific students?
Yes. Each KRF SmarTrip card has a unique serial number which will be linked to the students DC One Card profile when the card is issued to them. If a student requests a replacement card, the previous SmarTrip card assigned to the student will be automatically deactivated.
How will the card be used?
The KRF SmarTrip cards will be ready to use as soon as the card issued to a student for Metrorail, Metrobus, and DC Circulator. The card comes with a pass built-in valid for the 2018- 2019 school year that does not require any separate download or activation. Each SmarTrip card will have a unique serial number that will be assigned to each specific student. If a student transfers schools, that will not affect the SmarTrip card already assigned to them.
When does the new KRF SmarTrip card expire?
The KRF SmarTrip card is valid for 13 months from Summer 2018 to Fall 2019.
How will replacement cards be handled under this new model?
If a card needs to be replaced, students will need to request a new Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card from their DC One Card administrator (located at their respective school). In addition, the lost card will be reported to WMATA and “hot listed” and will no longer be active.
Will students be charged for replacement cards?
Students will not be charged for a replacement card. In the interim, students who lose their card will be responsible for paying their fare until they receive a replacement KRF SmarTrip card.
