Progress Report Letter
Dear Student Champions:
It’s a new year which signals a new opportunity for students to meet their academic goals. We want to provide you with some additional information about Summit, a competency-based learning tool. We hope that you will sign up to receive weekly text messages regarding your student’s progress. Lastly, we want to ensure you know who to contact when you have questions or concerns.
Competency-Based Learning
This year all Opportunity Academies, including Ballou STAY, are using an online competency-based program called Summit. Summit allows the students to master content both at their own pace and with the help of their teachers. Summit is composed of three parts:
- One-on-one mentoring – Students meet one-on-one with their mentor who is a teacher or school administrator at least once a week. Mentors also help students set both long-term and short-term goals as well as coach them through their academic progress.
- Projects – Students spend a majority of class time working on projects that allow them to apply content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and successful work habits to real-world scenarios. Teachers facilitate discussions and group activities as well as provide students with frequent verbal and written feedback, so that they can meet the course expectations.
- Self- Direction – Students learn to set goals, select strategies, implement their plans, and reflect on the outcome to see if their plans worked. In addition, teachers and mentors work with students to provide individualized academic support.
Monitor Progress
Students can monitor their progress daily by viewing their Summit platform. As students’ complete projects and pass short answer tests called content assessments, the platforms will turn “green” indicating mastery. If you would like to receive weekly updates on a student’s progress, please complete the form below:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_BVTnHK_IlsuJXl2Cs18ZCGMJctz4JZgOOIr29uBJnrU8yA/viewform?usp=sf_link
The ability to receive these updates will take the place of receiving a progress report. The student’s status changes so quickly on Summit that receiving weekly updates provide you with the most up to date information instead of paper reports.
Stay Connected
If you ever have questions or need to reach someone regarding your student’s academic progress, please reach out to our parent coordinator, Latreece Brown at [email protected]. She will be able to connect you to teachers, social workers, guidance counselors etc.
Thank you for partnering with us this year. We are looking forward to celebrating student success this year!
Sincerely
Cara Fuller
